NY Rising Community Reconstruction Plans

New York Metropolitan Area
In the wake of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, members of our design and planning team, with the indispensable help of affiliate BFJ Planning, became integrally involved in a number of high-profile resiliency initiatives throughout the New York metropolitan area. From the Rockaways to Staten Island, South Brooklyn to Nassau County, our resiliency experts have consulted with local governments and individual citizens, and worked with them to submit formal proposals through the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program for rebuilding communities that were affected by Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy. Three such proposals were recipients of 2014 and 2015 “Rising to the Top” Awards, which secured millions of dollars in additional funding for rebuilding and economic resiliency initiatives. Our team also made extensive contributions to PlaNYC’s 2013 report “A Stronger, More Resilient New York,” as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency (SIRR).

In 2016, Perkins Eastman partnered with 100 Resilient Cities, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, becoming the first architecture firm to join the organization’s Platform of Partners. From local community action to global treaties, addressing climate resilience through design is now an undisputed priority. Perkins Eastman’s work in this arena aims to rebuild communities and produce tangible results. Whether through new green infrastructure and public space, building retrofits, sustainable waterfront development, coastal protection, or any number of other ambitious yet achievable measures, our team is committed to setting the standard for climate resiliency and sustainable economic growth for communities in need.
