UCSD Cellular and Molecular Medicine East Research Laboratory

San Diego, California
The Molecular Biology Research Facility for UCSD provides a variety of specialized facilities as well as generic open laboratories for 20 principal investigators. The four-level building completes a quadrangle of research laboratories adjacent to the School of Medicine and provides a visual terminus for the University’s main north-south pedestrian spine.

Interior design issues and opportunities are actively incorporated into the architecture to create an environment that is efficient, flexible, and pleasing to work in. The open-bay laboratory plan encourages the exchange of ideas and discovery. Materials are chosen for their durability yet balanced for their aesthetic qualities. Natural light emphasizes key physical spaces within the building. Outdoor patios are extensions of the interior environment and encourage the exchange of ideas and discovery.
