University of Pittsburgh: Halls

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
As the first phase of the University’s goal to provide 1,200 new beds to upper-class students, Perkins Eastman designed a new nine-story, 420-bed, 130,000 sf residence hall located adjacent to the Petersen Event Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Dramatically situated on the edge of a steep hillside in the University’s upper campus neighborhood, Pennsylvania Hall overlooks the Oakland urban campus and forms an edge in this underdeveloped area. The facility houses students in a range of unit types, including single, double, and suite-style accommodations with private baths. The building includes common lounge areas, computer clusters, student laundry facilities, vending areas, mailroom, and coffee house.

After completing Pennsylvania Hall, Perkins Eastman programmed and designed the 160,000 sf Panther Hall, a ten-story, 513-bed student housing facility. Features of the building include a large guest lobby, café, fitness center, common student lounge areas, meeting/multi-purpose room, vending areas, mailroom, and student laundry facilities. By refining the main thoroughfare of the upper campus complex, the new building defines an edge to the underdeveloped neighborhood.
