DREAM Charter School

New York, New York
Perkins Eastman designed a new four-story, 63,000 sf home for DREAM Charter School in East Harlem. The DREAM Charter School’s educational approach is rooted in the belief that health and wellness education are essential components of a student’s development. Honoring this vision, the school was designed to be LEED Certified.

Located at the base of a new affordable housing tower also designed by Perkins Eastman, the 450-student K-8 school includes new office space for Harlem RBI, a well-established community organization in East Harlem and DREAM Charter School’s institutional partner that provides year-round sports, education, and enrichment activities for youth in the East Harlem and South Bronx neighborhoods. Public spaces include a gymnasium, cafeteria, fitness room, and multi-purpose room.

Sited within the George Washington Houses complex in East Harlem, the new building reenergizes the streetscape. By orienting light‐filled, open spaces toward the street, reviving the local park, opening up many of the facilities for use by the community, and making the school’s ideals visible and identifiable to passersby, the new building is an amenity for both the students and the community alike.
